How to View and Edit PDF Metadata
Every PDF carries a metadata block alongside its visible content — title, author name, the software it was created in, sometimes a full revision history. None of it shows up when you read the document, but it's there in the file, and it occasionally reveals more than intended: an author field with a former employee's name still attached to a company template, or a "created with" field that gives away exactly what software and version generated a supposedly anonymous document.
Steps
- Open the PDF Metadata Viewer & Editor and upload the file.
- Review what's currently stored — title, author, subject, creation and modification dates.
- Edit or clear any fields you don't want attached to the file.
- Download the updated PDF.
Worth checking before sending anything externally
Templates reused across a company are the most common source of stale metadata — a document built from a template someone else created months ago can still list that person as the author, even though they had nothing to do with the actual content. A quick metadata check before sending a document outside your organization catches this kind of thing before someone else notices it first.
